In a small saucepan, combine the water, dark brown sugar, chopped chocolate, cloves, and cinnamon stick. Heat over medium, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
Once it reaches a gentle boil, lower the heat. Simmer for 3–5 minutes so the chocolate fully melts and the spices infuse.
Place the ground coffee in a small strainer or infuser. Pour the hot spiced syrup through it and let it steep for 2–3 minutes, then strain into a mug.
Stir in the vanilla. Add the brandy last and give it a quick mix. If you like, let the cinnamon stick sit in the mug for about 1 minute, then remove it.
Serve hot. Keep the whole spices out of the mug; their flavor will already be in the drink.
