Set a small saucepan over medium-low heat and melt the butter. If it starts to brown, lower the heat right away.
Pour in the heavy cream and stir for 2–3 minutes until warmed through. Keep it gently steaming, not boiling.
Sprinkle in the grated Parmesan a little at a time. Whisk after each addition so it melts in smoothly without clumping.
Once the sauce lightly thickens, season with salt and black pepper. Stir on low for another 1–2 minutes to reach your preferred consistency.
Take off the heat and toss with hot pasta. If the sauce feels too thick, mix in 1–2 tablespoons warm pasta water to loosen it.
