Heat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Slice the onions thinly so they soften evenly.
Warm 1 tbsp oil or butter in a pan. Cook the onions over medium heat for 10–15 minutes, stirring often, until soft; don’t let them burn.
In a bowl, whisk the eggs. Pour in the milk. Add flour, salt, caraway seeds, and pepper, then whisk until smooth.
Stir the softened onions into the batter so they’re well distributed.
Pour into a greased pie dish or medium baking dish. Level the top with a spoon.
