Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a small cake pan; line the bottom with parchment if you like easy release.
Mix the butter and margarine until smooth. Add the sugar and beat until the mixture looks lighter and slightly fluffy.
Pour in the milk gradually and mix just until combined. Don’t overbeat—short mixing helps keep the crumb tender.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder. Add to the wet mixture in 2–3 additions, folding gently with a spatula.
Transfer the batter to the prepared pan and level the top. Tap the pan lightly once or twice to release large air bubbles.
Bake for about 35–40 minutes, until the top is lightly golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Let the cake rest in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a rack to cool slightly. Slice and serve.
