Heat the oven to 170°C (340°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment so the sticks release easily.
Combine the shredded cheddar, margarine, and butter. Add the flour, paprika, and hot pepper sauce, then mix just until a smooth, non-sticky dough forms.
Wrap the dough and chill for 10 minutes. This makes it easier to roll and slice into neat straws.
Roll the dough thin between two sheets of parchment. Cut into narrow strips and twist or leave straight. If you like, press each strip lightly into crushed rice cereal for extra crunch.
Arrange the straws with a little space between them. Bake 40–45 minutes, until dry and lightly golden at the edges. Check in the last 10 minutes since ovens vary.
Let them sit on the pan for 5 minutes, then move to a rack. They crisp up more as they cool. Serve with soup or as a savory snack.
