Line an 8-inch (20 cm) square pan with parchment, or lightly grease it. This makes lifting and slicing easier later.
In a saucepan over low to medium heat, melt the butter and margarine. Stir so it doesn’t scorch.
Add the cubed meltable processed cheese. Keep stirring until the mixture looks smooth and fully combined.
Take the pan off the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Don’t keep cooking it once the vanilla goes in.
Add the powdered sugar in batches, stirring each time. It will thicken quickly, so switch to a sturdy spatula if needed.
If it feels too stiff to spread, mix in 1–2 tablespoons milk. You want a thick, spreadable consistency.
Scrape the fudge into the pan and smooth the top. Cool for 30 minutes at room temp, then refrigerate for about 2 hours until firm.
Lift out, cut into small squares, and keep in an airtight container in the fridge.
